Day 3: Country, City and State
Objectives:
MATERIALS
Teacher: United States Map, Virginia Map, Copies of picture of United States and Virginia and Richmond for each student, the book Where Do I Live? by Chesanow, Chart Paper, Computer
Students: United States Map, Virginia Map, Glue
Lesson:
Differentiation:
For struggling students: work with them to show them country, city and state and assist them in pulling up Google Earth
For advanced students: give a list of other locations (in different countries and continents) to find on Google Earth
Assessment: Judge by the thumbs up (and by those who came up to point out spots on the map) if the class is understanding or if further instruction is needed

- Name City, State and Country again
- Call on student to come up and point out the country on your map
- Call on student to come up and point out their state on your map
- Call on student to come up and point out their city on your map
- Ask for a thumbs up if all students understand that where they have pointed is a representation of where they live?
- Read aloud the book Where Do I Live? by Chesanow
- Discuss the book bringing up continent, hemisphere, planet and galaxy as well as where she lives, including her bedroom
- Name continent, hemisphere, planet and galaxy where they live
- Compare where they live to where they live in the story
- Now focus on your school
- Conclude by asking students where their school is, going from neighborhood and that neighborhood is which town and that town is in which state and that state is in the United States of America
- Pull up school on Google Earth on computer and show on large screen
