Day 8: Putting It All Together

Objectives:
- Compare the similarities and differences between maps and globes
- Note that both globes and maps have symbols, colors and tell where places are and how far apart they are
- Note that globes show the whole world and are round
- Note that maps are smaller and usually show more specific places and are flat
- Define Globe as a round model of the earth
- Define Map as a drawing that shows what places look like from above and where they are located
- Define Symbol as a picture or thing that stands for something else
- Define Cardinal Directions as the directions north, south, east and west
- Define Compass Rose as the place on a map that houses the cardinal directions \
- Define Map Legend or Map Key as the place where symbols are defined
MATERIALS
Teacher: Previous Venn Diagram, Chart Paper, Definition Word Strips
Students: Folders
Lesson:
- Pull out the chart paper with the Venn Diagram from Day 1
- Read out the similarities and differences that were originally listed
- Ask if there are any new discoveries that like to add (ideally that they both have cardinal directions, symbols and a compass rose)
- Pull out a new piece of chart paper
- Label the pertinent vocabulary (Globe, Map, Symbol, Cardinal Directions, Compass Rose) and ask students to give you the definitions
- Post sentence strips of the definitions (made from previous chart paper) as students correctly define the terms
- Ask students to expand upon Symbol - what symbol is used for a capital? What are other symbols?
- Ask students to expand upon Map - what types of maps have they looked at? Which map would you look at to find Richmond?
- Conclude by asking students to post there answers in there folders.
